Curtain falls on Adebutu’s ambition as Supreme Court affirms Abiodun as Ogun governor

The political ambition of the Ogun State governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the 2023 general election, Ladi Adebutu came to a close as the Supreme Court this morning affirmed the election of Prince Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress as the governor of Ogun State.

The Supreme Court judgment has drawn the curtain on the ambition of Adebutu, son of popular betting magnate, Baba Ijebu, to rule Ogun State as the governorship will be zoned out from his Ogun East Senatorial district that produced the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun who also hails from Iperu Remo like Adebutu.

The appellants, Ladi Adebutu and the Peoples Democratic Party had prayed the apex court to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct fresh elections in the 99 polling units where elections were allegedly cancelled.

The Appeal Court, Lagos Division, had in a split decision on November 24, 2023, affirmed Abiodun’s re-election.

The majority judgment delivered by Justice Joseph Ikyegh dismissed the appeal filed by the PDP and its governorship candidate.

Reading the lead judgement, Justice Tijani Abubakar dismissed the appeal.
